In Uganda and across much of Sub-Saharan Africa, smallholder farmers are the backbone of food production. They contribute significantly to national food security, rural employment, and the fight against poverty. Yet, despite their importance, many of these farmers face persistent challenges—limited access to markets, outdated agricultural practices, lack of irrigation, and unreliable incomes. At ECANAT Group, we believe that empowering these farmers starts with one core principle: solid, research-driven solutions.
Listening to the Land and the People
Our approach begins in the field—not in the boardroom. We believe that lasting change happens when communities are heard, and their experiences inform policy and practice. That’s why ECANAT carries out detailed baseline studies, evaluations, and value chain analyses that focus on the unique realities of Uganda’s smallholder farmers.
From pineapple farmers in Luwero to beekeepers in Lira, our team collects firsthand data to uncover what’s working and where the gaps are. Our studies go beyond the surface to analyze production inputs, income patterns, market barriers, and climate resilience strategies.
Turning Research Into Practical Change
Data alone isn’t enough. The true power of our research lies in how it’s used.
In our collaboration with the Advocacy Coalition for Sustainable Agriculture (ACSA), we examined the profitability of organic vs. conventional pineapple farming. This study gave farmers and investors clear evidence of the long-term value of organic agriculture, sparking increased interest in eco-friendly practices and boosting rural incomes.
Similarly, our work on irrigation systems across five districts provided a snapshot of how small-scale farmers are using water-saving technology, the challenges they face, and the potential for scaling up. The findings informed local government and donor priorities, ensuring investments went where they were most needed.
Promoting Food Security and Livelihoods
ECANAT’s research also helps shape food security strategies. In our study for the Green Light Forum Uganda, we evaluated how reforestation and smallholder marketing programs were impacting food availability and income. Our analysis highlighted areas for improvement and contributed to better planning and more sustainable support for farming communities.
By linking agriculture to broader development goals—such as nutrition, women’s empowerment, and environmental conservation—we help ensure that the gains made on the farm benefit the entire community.
Looking Ahead: Supporting the Next Generation of Farmers
As Uganda’s population grows and climate pressures increase, it’s more urgent than ever to support smallholder farmers with the right tools, knowledge, and market access. ECANAT is committed to continuing our work on:
- Value chain development for underutilized crops and livestock
- Climate-smart agriculture practices
- Strengthening farmer cooperatives and seed systems
- Connecting producers to local and regional markets
Our goal is simple: to see smallholder farmers not just survive, but thrive.
