With the recent climate trends showing escalating reality of unprecedented global temperatures and increasing erratic weather, sustainable production is a challenge in Africa and Uganda. There are a number of organization training farmers in Agro ecological principles which goes beyond organic farming by treating farms as dynamic, self-sustaining eco systems practice; it is becoming a viable enterprise with the potential to transform livelihoods. By reducing dependence on costly chemical inputs and promoting natural farming methods, farmers are able to produce healthier food while preserving soil fertility and biodiversity. According to the Scientific Group of the UN Food Systems Summit 2021 report, food systems contribute approximately 17% of the country’s Gross Domestic Product.

Agro ecology does not only promote health and diverse food systems but also leads to conserving biodiversity, resource management, stabilization of yields and strengthening resilience towards the impacts of climate change.

With the current four-acre agricultural model promoted by the president, agro ecology entrepreneurship comes in handy along the value chains to create sustainable financial avenues for mainly youth and women. With the global need to consume healthy and safe foods that puts into consideration the sustainable aspects, these promises ready markets both locally and internationally. The practice leads to environmental development, diversification leading to food security. This coupled with value addition along the different value chains leads to job creation and financial freedom.

According to the Economic, Policy Research Center 2023, the entrepreneurship initiatives also increase resilience of food systems to market shocks for instance, by creating shorter value chains for agricultural products.

However, it should be noted that the knowledge about agro ecology needs to spread more to the grass roots to enable big supplies of products that meet the international standards. Government in this has a key role to play leading to sustainability including; trainings about agro ecology, training skills in processing, branding and marketing. Availing financial support specifically to agro ecology farmers as a motivation to engage.

In conclusion, there is a collective responsibility to every one towards protecting the environment which agro ecology answers to. With this we carter for our next generation and strengthened finances for different families taking part in the entrepreneurship.
